FAQ

Q: How do i book a class?

A: You may call or email us to book a class, OR click the RESERVE button from class page.  This will take you to our 'Request to Book' form.  Fill out the form as best you can, then SUBMIT.  Once received, we will RESPOND to your request via email (or phone if specified) to let you know whether or not there is space in class.  We will then finalize your reservation.

Q:  How much advance notice do I need to give to reserve a class?

A:  Classes must be booked at least 24 hours in advance.

Q: IT LOOKS LIKE A SURFBOARD.  DO I HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO SURF?

A: Not at all, but you must know how to swim.

Q: IS THERE A MINIMUM OR MAXIMUM AGE OR SIZE TO PADDLE?

A: The minimum age to attend our classes is 11 years old.  All minors require parental permission.   As long as you are in reasonable good health, there is no reason why anyone cannot paddle.  Our boards can handle up to 275 - 300lbs.  PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE OVER 6' 3".

Q: WHERE DO I GO FOR MY LESSON?

A: Beautiful Jordan Lake in Apex, NC or access points in Chapel Hill, NC.  SUP on Jordan Lake is ideal.  There's much to explore! Prior to your lesson we will contact you via phone or email to confirm location and meeting place.

Q: IS THERE A PARKING FEE?

A:   We choose our access points based on public SAFETY and clean, debris free access.  At some meeting locations and times, the State Park charges a parking fee.   The fee is directly tied to expenses that support overall park maintenance and expenses to keep it open and clean.  We do, however, meet at locations with FREE early bird parking AND we offer RIDE SHARE options to help with cost, cut down on emissions and overcrowding during busy times.  If you plan on joining us several times in a calendar year, we recommend buying an annual parking pass.  The pass covers both Jordan Lake State Park and Falls Lake in Raleigh, as well as coastal ferry rides and more.  See the park office for more info.

Q: WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT ARE ACCEPTED?  HOW DO I PAY FOR MY LESSON?

A:   We accept cash or check or all major credit cards, debit cards and electronic funds transfer through PayPal (includes a 2.9% CC fee - which works out to be about $1.50 for a $50 class).  If paying by CC, we will send you a secure link to pay online.  If paying by cash or check, payment is due upon arrival at our meeting place or you may mail a check to our business address if paying far enough in advance.

Q: Is there a cancellation fee?

A:   There is a cancellation fee for classes missed or cancelled without 48 hour notice.  We understand if there is an emergency, however, we ask that you and your group respect our policy so that you do not take a space in a class that could otherwise be filled.  No refunds are given for pre-paid classes, but you may choose to exchange for another class if canceled within 48 hours.

Q: WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

A: A swimsuit or comfy water-loving clothing (think polyester, lycra, spandex...), sunscreen, water & a towel.  If you wear glasses, be sure to have a strap so that they stay on.  In the Fall/Winter, please be prepared with warm clothing, booties, etc.

Q: WHAT ABOUT ADVERSE WEATHER AND WIND CONDITIONS?

A:  If adverse weather or extreme wind conditions pose a threat, we may have to cancel your lesson.  In the event that we are unable to paddle, we will reschedule your lesson immediately.  Safety is our priority.  We’ll be sure to contact you if things aren’t looking safe enough to paddle.

Q: DO YOU RENT YOUR SUP BOARDS?

A:  Our classes provide ample time on your board accompanied by an instructor.  We make it easy for you to enjoy free-style exploration in all our classes.  Our rates and equipment are often better than any rental, plus you'll never paddle alone or find yourself in an unsafe situation without help.  You get much much more for your money at LYF SUP!

Q: I WANT TO BUY MY OWN BOARD FOR YOUR CLASSES.  WHAT DOES A FULL PADDLEBOARDING SET-UP COST?

A: Depending on the brand, model, & size, the cost of a good SUP board and paddle ranges from about $1,200 to $2,800 +.  This is a "get what you pay for" kind of sport.   All of our gear is top quality.  As a Jimmy Lewis Boards and HALA gear ambassador, I can help you discover the difference quality makes!  We now offer Hala and SOL paddleboards and gear for sale!

Q: WHAT DOES 'LYF' MEAN?  IS THAT A WORD OR DOES IT STAND FOR SOMETHING ELSE?

A: Both!  You may be surprised to know that our present day spelling of “life” has appeared with the spelling “lyf” in old texts.  LYF is also our acronym for Light Your Fire and Love Your Fitness.   Because when you learn to paddleboard, you will stoke your inner fire and fall in love with fitness again!
